The airline was initially known as Gulf Aviation Company, founded in 1950 by British Royal Air Force (RAF) officers Paul W.R. Corkhill and Arthur W.L. Bond. The company served as a private charter service, offering flights to passengers in the Persian Gulf region, and was the first airline in the region to offer scheduled services.

In 1968, Gulf Aviation changed its name to Gulf Air, and the airline began to expand its services, with more frequent flights and an increased number of destinations. This expansion was helped by the airline's strong relationship with the government of Bahrain, which had become independent in 1971.

In the early 1980s, Gulf Air began to expand its fleet, with the addition of wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 767 and the Airbus A300. This allowed the airline to open up more international routes, including flights to London and Paris.

In 1987, Gulf Air entered into a code-sharing agreement with British Airways, allowing passengers to book flights on both airlines. This agreement was a major milestone for the airline, as it allowed Gulf Air to increase its presence in Europe and other markets.

In the late 1990s, Gulf Air began to expand its fleet even further, with the addition of more Airbus and Boeing aircraft, including the Airbus A320, the Boeing 777, and the Airbus A330. This allowed the airline to open up more long-haul routes and increase its presence in the Middle East.

Gulf Air has been involved in a number of incidents over the years, including several air crashes. In 1983, a Gulf Air flight from Bahrain to Dubai crashed, killing all on board. In 1996, another Gulf Air flight crashed in the Persian Gulf, killing all 143 passengers and crew on board. This incident led to an investigation by the Bahraini government, which found that the crash was likely caused by pilot error.

Despite these incidents, Gulf Air has continued to be an important part of the aviation industry, with a fleet of over 60 aircraft and routes to over 40 destinations around the world. The airline has also made a number of important technological innovations, such as the introduction of online check-in and mobile boarding passes, as well as the launch of its loyalty program, Gulf Air FalconFlyer.

Gulf Air is an important part of the aviation industry, and has played a major role in the development of the Middle East. The airline has over 70 years of experience, and has managed to remain successful despite a number of incidents and challenges. With a strong focus on innovation and customer service, Gulf Air is sure to remain a major player in the aviation industry for many years to come.
